In recent years there has been major discoveries of High altitude indian villages from nearly a thousand year ago. Archeologists are extremely excited about what is being found. I spent a week here one August in a constant weather deluge with a lot of snow, sleet. rain and more snow.

Grand Teton

For years I have done gouache watercolors at quick-draws having felt very comfortable but in the past year or so I find as in fine art that Oils are commanding much better prices for those events so with that in mind I am going to bone up on doing 45 minute Oils for a while and see just what I can accomplish with doing so. Bonneville Pass

A great summer hike if I only have a few hours is up onto Bonneville Pass. The trail takes off from Brooks Lake eastward along the north face of the Pinnacles and opens into a lush meadow with the actual pass sitting in the middle of that meadow. You follow a stream up to the pass and this stream [I have painted] eastward at the pass which is the headwaters of the West Fork of the DuNoir River. Towering peaks are the backdrop and the trail is marked with numerous waterfalls.

This is from several years ago when I spent a little time in Saguaro Natl Park west of Tuscon. It was in February and in a campground with not a soul around. Frosted Cottonwoods

While we in Dubois have been having phenomenal January weather, Riverton 75 miles and over 2000 feet lower in elevation are in the deep freeze with sub zero temperatures at night. They don't get the wind such as we do which really warms things up.[chinook]

I was down there a week ago and shot a number of photos of the trees all decked out in their winter finery. Moisture from fog is super cooled and clings to the even colder objects leaving a heavy coat of frost on all things touched. Trees seem especially touched by this beautiful frost layer.

It definitely gives an artist great opportunities for paintings.

Winter Sunrise

I don't often finish a painting in Acrylic but use Acrylics only as an underpainting for my oils. Guess I got carried away with this one and finished it off with acrylics. It is from about a week ago when we had temperatures of 25 to 30 degrees below zero which causes quite a condensing from the warm river water and with mists rising it creates a surreal world for the sun to rise against. I have several other ideas for paintings from those mornings.

My painting for today is from a photo I took of Willow Creek in Colorado between Willow Creek Pass and the town of Granby, Colorado. A huge portion of Evergreens has succumed to the onslaught of the Bark Beetle in the Rocky Mountain area. It is really in evidence in northern Colorado. Most of the coniferous forests have fallen prey to these tiny little beetles. Befor the needles completely fall off the trees it does show off a beauty of its own
